Vietnam is a long, narrow country in South-East Asia, about three to six hours by direct flight from India, depending on the city. Most trips go from north to south, using short domestic flights between regions.
In the north, Hanoi is the capital, with the busy lanes of the Old Quarter, calm lakes and street food. From here you take a cruise on Ha Long Bay, famous for limestone islands rising out of green water. In the centre, Da Nang has long beaches and Ba Na Hills with the Golden Bridge, while the old town of Hoi An glows with lanterns at night. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City is fast and modern, close to the Cu Chi tunnels and the rivers of the Mekong Delta. Phu Quoc island adds a relaxed beach break at the end.

It suits honeymooners, couples, friends' groups and families who like a mix of sightseeing, nature and shopping. Each region has its own weather, so plan the route by season. Vegetarian food needs a little planning, and you need an e-visa, so apply early.

- North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay): best October to April. December to February is cool, so pack a jacket. Summer is hot, humid and stormy.
- Centre (Da Nang, Hoi An): mostly dry February to August, and very hot by June. Rainy roughly September to December, with a risk of storms and floods.
- South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong, Phu Quoc): dry December to April; rainy May to November, often in short afternoon showers.
- February to April suits a full north-to-south trip. December and January also work, but the centre can still be wet.

How to reachकैसे पहुँचें
- Flights: Direct flights link several Indian cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Flying time is roughly three to six hours, depending on the city.
- Fly into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City (or the reverse) to avoid backtracking.
- Inside Vietnam: Domestic flights connect Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc, usually in one to two hours.
- Ha Long Bay: about 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Hanoi.
- Hoi An: under an hour by road from Da Nang.
- Cu Chi and Mekong Delta: day trips by road from Ho Chi Minh City.

Hanoi's Old Quarter is a maze of narrow lanes full of shops, cafes and street stalls. Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, watch a traditional water puppet show and visit the Temple of Literature. Evenings are lively and fun. Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has thousands of limestone islands rising out of emerald water. Choose a day cruise or an overnight cruise with a cabin. Trips usually include a cave visit, kayaking and a stop at a small beach or viewpoint. Da Nang is a clean, easy-going beach city on the central coast. Relax on My Khe beach, explore the Marble Mountains with their caves and pagodas, and see the Dragon Bridge, which usually breathes fire and water on weekend nights. Ba Na Hills sits high above Da Nang and is reached by a very long cable car. At the top is the Golden Bridge, held up by two giant stone-like hands, plus a French-style village, gardens and rides. Hoi An is a charming old trading town listed by UNESCO. Walk past yellow houses, the Japanese Covered Bridge and old assembly halls. At night the lanes glow with silk lanterns, and you can float a small lantern on the river from a boat. Ho Chi Minh City, still often called Saigon, is Vietnam's biggest and busiest city. See the War Remnants Museum, the old Central Post Office and the French-era buildings around it, and shop at Ben Thanh Market. Usually about two hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City, this huge network of underground tunnels was used during the Vietnam War. Guides show hidden entrances, traps and how people lived below ground. You can crawl through a short, widened stretch if you wish. The Mekong Delta is a green land of rivers, canals and fruit farms south of Ho Chi Minh City. A day trip usually includes a boat ride, a small rowing boat through narrow canals, tasting local fruit and a visit to a workshop making coconut candy. Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, in the far south, with soft beaches and lovely sunsets. Spend lazy beach days, go island hopping with snorkelling, ride the long sea cable car and walk the night market for snacks. Ride the long cable car up Ba Na Hills, walk the Golden Bridge and explore the French-style village and gardens. Go early, as it gets crowded. In the late afternoon, drive under an hour to Hoi An, stroll the lantern-lit old town and float a lantern on the river.

Visa & documentsवीज़ा और दस्तावेज़
- Visa needed: Indians need a visa for mainland Vietnam. Apply for the e-visa on the official site, evisa.gov.vn.
- The e-visa is valid for up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry. Choose multiple entry if you will leave Vietnam and come back.
- Processing usually takes 3-7 working days. Apply at least two weeks before your flight to be safe.
- Your passport must be valid for 6 months and have 2 blank pages.
- Phu Quoc: the island allows visa-free stays of up to 30 days, but only if you fly directly to Phu Quoc from abroad and stay only on the island. If your trip also covers Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, you need the e-visa. Even for a Phu Quoc-only trip, an e-visa is still advised (Indian Embassy advisory, April 2026).
- Carry a printout of your e-visa along with your passport.

- Ask for vegetarian food as 'chay' and say 'no fish sauce' (in Vietnamese, 'khong nuoc mam'). Processing usually takes 3-7 working days, but it can take longer around holidays. Apply at least two weeks before your flight. Before submitting, check that your name, date of birth and passport number match your passport exactly, because a small mistake can cause trouble at the airport.
