Mauritius is a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. It is ringed by coral reefs, so most beaches have calm, clear lagoons. Inland you find green hills, sugarcane fields, waterfalls and viewpoints. The island is small, and most drives take under 1.5 hours.
For Indians, Mauritius feels like a home away from home. A large part of the population is of Indian origin, Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely understood, and temples and Indian food are easy to find. - November to April (warm summer): Hot and humid with a warm sea, ideal for beach time, but expect short tropical showers.
- Cyclone risk (roughly January to March): A cyclone can bring a few days of strong wind and rain, and boat trips may be cancelled. Keep flexible days and take travel insurance.

- By air: The international airport (Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam) is in the south-east of the island. Direct flights usually run from Mumbai and Delhi; from Mumbai it is around 6 hours in the air. From other Indian cities, you connect through a metro city or a Gulf hub.
- Time difference: Mauritius is 1.5 hours behind India.
- Airport transfers: East coast hotels are usually 45 minutes to 1 hour away. The north (Grand Baie) and the west (Flic en Flac) usually take about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Getting around: Most visitors use a private car with driver for sightseeing. Cars drive on the left, just like in India.

Grand Baie is the lively hub of the north, with shops, cafes, restaurants and a busy bay. From here, catamaran cruises sail to islets like Ile Gabriel and Flat Island for swimming, snorkelling and a beach stop, usually with lunch on board. A small island off the east coast with soft white sand and a shallow turquoise lagoon. You reach it by speedboat from the mainland. Spend the day swimming, relaxing on the beach or trying parasailing and glass-bottom boat rides. Many boat trips also stop at a small waterfall on the way. In the green south-west hills, Chamarel is home to the Seven Coloured Earth, small dunes of red, brown, purple and yellow soil formed from old volcanic rock. Nearby, the Chamarel Waterfall drops from a high cliff into thick forest, seen from a viewpoint. The island's largest national park protects forested hills and deep valleys in the south-west. A sacred crater lake in the hills, also called Ganga Talao, and the most important Hindu pilgrimage site in Mauritius. Temples line the shore, and a giant Shiva statue stands near the entrance. During Maha Shivaratri, many devotees walk here from across the island. Le Morne Brabant is a dramatic mountain on the south-west tip, a UNESCO World Heritage Site linked to the history of escaped slaves. Below it lies one of the island's best beaches, with a wide lagoon popular for kitesurfing. Boats leave early in the morning from the Tamarin and Black River area to watch wild dolphins in the bay, often combined with snorkelling and a beach stop. Sightings are common but never guaranteed. The sea is usually calmest in the morning, which leaves you a relaxed afternoon. The capital is a busy harbour city. Stroll the Caudan Waterfront for shops and cafes, and visit the colourful central market for local snacks and souvenirs. Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where indentured workers from India first arrived in the 1800s, a moving stop for Indian visitors. This old botanical garden in the north is famous for its pond of giant water lilies, tall palm trees and spice plants. It is a shady, easy walk, which makes it good for families and seniors.
